There is no honest one-price answer for a Fayette County move. Two households going the same distance can need very different crews and hours. The useful number is the written estimate built from your inventory, both addresses, access at each property, and the services you want.
How is a local move in Fayette County priced?
Georgia uses two pricing methods for moves that stay inside the state. According to the Georgia Department of Public Safety Moving Guide, a move of 50 miles or less is charged by the number of workers and the hours needed to load, move, and unload. A move over 50 miles is charged by shipment weight and distance.
Most moves between Peachtree City, Fayetteville, Tyrone, and Brooks fit the hourly model, but the actual addresses decide which method applies. A move that starts in Fayette County and goes farther across Georgia may cross the 50 mile line. A move that crosses a state line follows federal rules instead, even if the mileage is short.
For a local hourly move, start with this calculation:

What does Georgia allow a licensed mover to charge?
Georgia does not set one required price. It publishes maximum rates for licensed intrastate household goods movers, and movers may charge less. The current Maximum Rate Tariff No. 7, effective January 13, 2026, lists these hourly ceilings for a van and crew:

These are regulatory ceilings, not Premiere Movers rates and not county averages. Under the tariff, regular hours are generally 8:00am to 5:00pm on weekdays. Saturdays, Sundays, and listed holidays fall under overtime hours. The state also permits a two hour minimum on weekdays and a three hour minimum on weekends and holidays.
At the maximum two-mover rate, the base transportation ceiling at the minimum would be $393.86 for two regular hours or $739.41 for three overtime hours. Your actual quote may be lower. Materials, requested packing, full value protection, or another agreed service can change the total, so compare the complete estimate rather than the headline hourly rate.
What makes one Fayette County move cost more than another?
Time is the biggest variable on an hourly move. The hourly rate matters, but a lower rate does not save money if the job takes longer because the crew is too small or the access was never discussed.

What should a written estimate show?
Georgia requires a licensed professional mover to provide a free written estimate. The state guide says it should identify the goods and services, crew size, vehicle size, and the mover’s responsibility for loss or damage. It should also say whether the estimate is binding or nonbinding.
A binding estimate fixes the charge for the shipment and services described in the document. If you add a stop, packing, or items that were not disclosed, that is additional scope and should be documented before the work continues.
A nonbinding estimate is an informed projection rather than a fixed total. Under Georgia household goods carrier rules, a mover cannot require more than 110% of the nonbinding estimate as a condition of releasing the shipment at delivery. Any remaining lawful balance is deferred for 30 days.
Before you compare quotes, make sure each company priced the same job:
- The same inventory and all rooms, including the garage, attic, and storage unit.
- The same pickup and delivery access, including stairs, elevators, gates, and long carries.
- The same crew and truck size.
- The same packing, materials, furniture work, and protection option.
- The same move date and start window.
If one estimate is much lower, find the missing assumption. A cheap quote that excludes the third-floor walk-up or the second stop is not a cheaper version of the same move.
How can you lower the cost without cutting corners?
Finish packing before the crew arrives. On an hourly move, readiness is the cleanest way to reduce time without asking the crew to rush your belongings. Seal and label boxes, clear the carrying path, separate anything that is not going, and decide where furniture will land at the new home.
Then solve access early. Reserve the elevator, confirm gate entry, make room for the truck, and tell the estimator about a steep or narrow driveway. A crew standing at a locked gate is still a crew and truck reserved for your job, and Georgia rules allow waiting-time charges in some circumstances.
